Sokcho City is located in the northeastern part of Gangwon-do. this area is one of the most unspoiled natural regions of Korea. Mt. Seorak is one of the most famous attration in Sokcho.
Today, I will introduce popular attractions of Sokcho for local people other than Mt. Seorak.
First, Check your Bus timings carefully. below time table is from Dongseoul Inter-city bus terminal to Sokcho Inter-city Bus terminal.
As you can see, every buses are different travelling time, it vary with the route.
I took a 08:29 bus for Sokcho due to this tour is one-day tour!!
Here is Sokcho Inter-city Bus terminal.
Getting off the bus and come into Terminal, you can see this Entrance directly in front.
Before you start the tour, visit Tourists information center in order to get some infomation and map of Sokcho.
There are Maps, Tour package promotional materials and more. Then, I looked for place to go on a map, and consulted a map for directions.
Above itinerary was settled that I went on tours in Sokcho.
Most Attractions swarm in 10min away from Terminal on foot.
Here is one of the entrance of Sokcho Tour, Fisheries Market.
This market is seemed to be a lot like other tranditional markets in Korea. There are 5 different theme at every alley of Market. such as fruit & vegetable, Salted seafood & fishery, Sundae(Korean Sausage), Chili(one of the main ingredient of Kimchi), Sweet & Sour Chicken.
Sweet & Sour Chicken by this market is best known to local people. further details are introduced on end of this post.
Then, I moved to next place, Gaetbae boat dock.
On the way to Gaetbae boat dock, I saw the one of the famous restaurant for Local people by chance.
The name is 88(palpal) grilled fish.
This restaurant is famous for grilled fish, and is introduced and shown on TV program in Korea.
The unique point of this restaurant is using charcoal broiled fish, also there is no almost fishy smellless!
Ajumma(아줌마), waitress will broil fish over fire on your behalf.
KRW12,000 will be charged per person. have to order at least 2people.
After having lunch, I went to Gaetbae boast dock, in order to go over Abai village.
In front of 88 restaurant, you can see the Gaetbae boat dock.
This Gaetbae boat is driven by a manpower. (pulling on ropes moving the boat across a waterway) and taken from downtown to Abai village (Cheongho-dong).
You dont' need a ticket or anything, just get on board, then you just pay for it when arrived.
it costs only KRW200 for one-way trip.
The Orginal name of Abai village is Cheongho-dong. Thesedays, it is referred to as Abai village commonly when Many elderly people fled to Cheongho-dong from North Korea during the Korean War. The word 'Abai' comes from the Hamgyeong-do Province dialect meaning ‘an aged person.’.
Accordingly, Hagyeong-do's local food has descended up to this day, 'Abai sundae'(Korean Sausage) & stuffed squid (Ojingeo sundae) and 'naengmyeong'(cold noodle) are typical food in this village.
This dish is Abai sundae & stuffed squid (Ojingeo sundae).
This is Corn Makgeolli (Korean traditional raw rice wine), This Makgeolli matches well with Abai sundae & stuffed squid. I strongly recommend you try it both.
After that, I went for a walk along the beach.
There is sign that ‘Gaeul Donghwa’ (Autumn in My Heart) was filmed here in Abai village.
On the way back to Terminal, I stopped off at the Sokcho Tour, Fisheries Market again.
Because, I need to buy this Sweet & Sour Chicken! actually, this is most famous food in Sokcho. Morever, Anyone travelling in Sokcho must have at least one pack of this.
There are so much different Sweet & Sour Chicken stores in Market, but there are the one very famous one.
The store name is 'Mansuk', you can find this store easily, because This store is the busiest store in Market.
Be honest to tell you that, if you know the taste of it, you might be disappointed. because, its taste is not really unique.
After buying one pack of Sweet and Sour Chicken, I looked around the Salted seafood & fishery alley in Market.
The street food vendor were tempting to me.
then, I came back to Sokcho Inter-city Bus Terminal, and checked the time table from Sokcho to Seoul.
In case of fully booked the tickets, you better reserve seats when you arrive at Sokcho at first.
Finally arrived at Dong Seoul bus Terminal. I had an enjoyable day at Sokcho.
Please expect to see my next posting then:)
